[net.dcom] cheapie short haul modems

taylor (10/28/82)

I received my demo units, and they indeed seem to perform to specs. The test
system we used was 19 gauge wire. Limits on direct connect were 2400 baud
at 5000 feet. With the short hauls, we could run 10000 feet at 19.2.
What can I say except it worked. Noted anomalies:
1) In a typical short hauls environment, polarity of the leads is unimportant
as the signal is AC. In this case, since the unit seems to work of the pos.
eia leads, the signal is variable amplitude dc. Consequently, polarity of
the leads is absolutely essential.
2) The 9114 SLIMs have up no eia leads when no connection is established.
Consequently, the unit does not work (at this time) for connecting a terminal
to a 9114. Develcon (Canada) is working on a fix for this.
