[rec.games.board] Results of othello tournament in Utrecht

henkp@nikhefk.UUCP (Henk Peek) (02/15/89)

I am posting this message for a friend Kees van Rijn.

Last Saturday, February 11 1989
there was an open ( computer- ) othello tournament
at the "Hogeschool voor de Kunsten" (HKU) in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
This tournament was organized by the University of Utrecht, Department
of Philosophy and the HKU in combination with a symposium on

         "The Game in Artificial Intelligence".

This was the eight' national tournament and the

"First Open Dutch ( Computer- ) Othello Championship".

Participating in this tournament was
othello expert Imre Leader from England,
European Champion, third on the world list,
who gave an enormously sportive performance
by taking part in the tournament.
Also participating were two programs from France,
COMP'OT of Francois Aguillon and THEOLE written by Bequet.
BRAND, originally written by Anders Kierulf, was sent in by
Per-Erik Wahlberg for participation.
In total 1 human player plus 19 programs took part.

Without doubt the strongest present was :

- COMP'OT written by Francois Aguillon ( France );

he won all games played in the tournament.
Also in the revanche game at the end of the tournament
with reversed colors, the presently best Dutch program,
second in the tournament, was beated :

- *VRT! by Roemer Lievaart ( The Netherlands )

The games played against Imre Leader and REV-89 of
Joost Buijs were won by *VRT!. Third in the tournament ended :

- MAST87 by Ron Kroonenberg ( The Netherlands )

He won the game against Imre Leader and drew to REV-89 and BADIA.
Difference in strength of Ron's program with

- Imre Leader ( England ) - not with a program but playing himself;
European champion and third on the
world list after Brian Rose and (shortly)
                            David Shaman -
- REV-89 by Joost Buijs ( The Netherlands )

is very uncertain however. Relative strength of *VRT! and MAST87 is
also not completely certain, because they did not play against each
other during the tournament. Imre won the game against REV-89.
Next place was occupied by

- BADIA by Marcel van Tien ( The Netherlands )

Further places were occupied by a group of programs for which the
tournament gave no clear discrimination in relative strength :

- VERS2 Ben de Wolf ( The Netherlands )
- THEOLE Bequet ( France )
- MY-TURN 2.0.LAST Cas Wilders ( The Netherlands )
- BI-zonder-GO-ED Ed van Doorn ( The Netherlands )
- DESDEMONA Otto Perdeck ( The Netherlands )
- BRAND Anders Kierulf and Per-Erik Wahlberg ( Switzerland, Sweden )
- .... Paul Gorissen ( The Netherlands )
- TPO Jansen op de Haar ( The Netherlands )
- REVERSI 4.1 Gerlof Hoekstra ( The Netherlands )

The program of Gerlof Hoekstra won one game however, because his opponent
( Gerard Platzer ) arrived late at the tournament. Especially interesting
is the increase in strength of VERS2 by Ben de Wolf compared to
last year. His place in this group is not completely certain, as he
did only play against COMP'OT of the highest ranked participants.
VERS2 was beated by BI-zonder-GO-ED, and he won from THEOLE.
Next places in the list are occupied by

- SETHOS Gerard Platzer ( The Netherlands )
- DUMBO Ton Duijker ( The Netherlands )
- BOTRAK Derk Boonstra ( The Netherlands )
- FLIP Wilbert Stoopendaal ( The Netherlands )

Note however that BOTRAK running on a casio calculator, beated
DUMBO and HELA5.
The last place was taken by

- HELA5 written by Henk Langbroek ( The Netherlands ).

We plan to publish full details of the tournament in OQ, and
we expect to organize a tournament next year again.
