As you're aware, Friday, September 1st marks the 50th anniversary of the German invasion of Poland on that day in 1939, and thus, the beginning of the Second World War (despite earlier roots in the Pacific). Feelings on the war vary, but all must agree that that conflict has, more than any other event, formed the world in which we live today. To mark this, something of an experiment is being conducted in sci.military. Each day, a summary of the headline events of that same day fifty years previous will be posted. Readers will see the war progress day by day, much as it was seen by those who experienced it. The accounting will attempt to be brief, factual, and neutral; no editorializing or philosophy. Interpretation is left to the readers. At this point, it's impossible to say exactly the format that will be used; it will no doubt evolve over time in response to reader feedback. If you're interested, you can subscribe to sci.military and check out a few issues. Each edition will contain the line "Subject: 50 Years Ago", which can be used in kill files if desired. Followups to misc.misc; flames to email, please. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Bill Thacker military@cbnews.att.com Send submissions for "50 Years Ago" to military-request@att.att.com
