I Have a penril 300/1200 AD modem which I use with my terminal. I think that the unit sells for about $800. I have been relatively happy with the modem; it has many nice features: Has 10 cells to store phone numbers or text (logons & passwds) You can make a cell secret (for password or numbers) Allows you to link numbers so that when one is busy it automatically dials the back-up. However, there are some problems, such as: The modem only knows about upper case and it folds l.c. and hence is not as usefull as it could be (i.e. cant store unix logons or passwds unless they are in U.C.) the modem does not know how to generate * or # tones, so cannot call numbers that contain these symbols. the manual is rather difficult to waid through. I have no experience with the rack mounted unit, but Im sure that the features are comperable. If you have any specific questions on the unit, I will be happy to look up the data in my manual. The Penril autodialer does now support both upper and lower case, and the manual has been revised. The problem with * and # remains, though they say they are working on it. The best feature for Develcon dataswitch users is that the Penril now works VERY well for both incoming and dialing calls on the same line. (Yes, we have about 4 in production performing the above functions.) It remains my choice for autodialers. (See your penril rep for the later software revs. The changes are quite significant.)
