[net.music] SUICIDAL TENDENCIES

kds@intelca.UUCP (Ken Shoemaker) (09/04/85)

Who are these people, anyway? They have one "tune" that is getting a fair
amount of air play out here, apparently from the "Repo Man" sound track,
called "Institutional" (or something like that). Anyone know where they
came from, whether anything else they have is worth listening to, or
what the words to this song are (I kinda loose it after the line
"I'm not crazy"). If you haven't heard this, you should listen for it,
it's a riot, and very, um, deep...
--
...and I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody outside of a small circle
of friends...

Someone recently asked about SUICIDAL TENDENCIES on the net and since
I haven't seen any reply guess I'll ante up my 2 cents worth. SUICIDAL
TENDENCIES were borne from the hardcore explosion from South Calfornia.
They released one record in 1983 on Frontier (P.O. BOX 22, Sun Valley,
CA. 91352) which actually was about one step ahead of their contempararies
at the time. ST had been more or less considered ( before the album) to
be pretty much assholes but the recording clarifies this image problem
by bringing their humorous lyrics out of the twilight zone that their
live performances consigned them too. They are most famous for their
song, Institutionalized ("All I wanted was a Pepsi!!!") but that by
far isn't the best song on the LP/EP (It's too short to be an LP but
too long to be an EP - how about MP). Check out "I saw your Mommy
and your Mommy was dead" ("I took a picture cause I thought it was neat")
and "Suicide Alternatives". The last song even has a psychedelic
intro (unheard of before Husker Du's Zen ARCADE) which quickly turns into a wild
thrash. It's a good intro to hardcore. If you just liked Institutionalized
it's on the Repo Man soundtrack.
