Pardon me for posting this trivial question here but I have searched my literature and failed to find the answer. What is the difference between a 103 and a 113 modem? Derek Andrew; U of Saskatchewan; sask!derek

#R:sask:-27700:ima:14400001:000:555 ima!johnl Jul 28 12:24:00 1983 The difference between a 103 and 113 modem is pretty minimal. They both use the same frequencies and modulating techniques, so one can communicate perfectly well with the other. The 103s can run in either originate or answer mode, while a single 113 can be an originate-only model or answer-only model, but not both. As you might expect, a 113 is cheaper than a 103. As you might also expect, 103/113 compatible modems from other than Western Electric are usually cheaper and more flexible, but nowhere near as indestructable. John Levine, ima!johnl

I would like to state that Western Electric modems have demonstrated no better or worse reliability records than any other manufacturer. If you have MTBF or other information, I would like to see it. By the way, in my experience, the "desk model" 103 modem from Western is horrible. It definately is not proof against a 30 inch drop to a wood floor...
