[aus.mac] Serial -> Localtalk software for printing?

legg@sirius.ucs.adelaide.edu.au (Christian Legg) (09/19/90)

  Hello everyone out there.

We have a problem that I'm sure someone else must have come across.
One of our departments has a Laserwriter II connected (via a serial line)
to a UNIX box. This is restrictive, as the printer is only used for
TTY type output from this box, and they cannot use the Laserwriter with
the Macintoshes without resetting the printer. This causes quite a few
problems anyway, as the UNIX print queue usually barfs when this is done.

The department would rather not invest in a Multigate-like device that
would allow Localtalk to be bridged onto the UNIX box with the necessary
encapsulation. That's just a bit too expensive.

What would be nice would be to revert the Laserwriter to Localtalk
operation (so that all Macs could easily access it) and have a dedicated
macintosh (512ke type) that would take the UNIX box serial output and
channel it onto the Localtalk, just as if the mac itself was using it.

So, my question is, is there a software package to do this? It doesn't
sound too hard a task, as the UNIX serial output line would be feeding
PostScript anyway.

Any help or information will be greatly appreciated.

  cheers

    Christian Legg
