[aus.mac] Mac Connection to Ethernet Backbone

grants@syacus.acus.oz (Grant Sayer) (10/05/90)

Does anyone have information on the hardware required to connect a
local group of macs (eg, Mac Plus, SE, IIC? ) linked by LocalTalk to
an ethernet backbone. Please e-mail any responses so a summary can
be posted.

Information on hardware &/or software would be appreciated ?

Thanks In Advance.

No doubt you'll get lots of responses on Shiva, Cayman, Webster,
UngerMann-Bass, NRC, Compatible Systems, Nuvotech, etc to name but a few
manufactures of LocalTalk-to-Ethernet equipment. And of course any mac
with Apple's Internet Router and an ethernet card (or with Liaison s/w -
who've just changed ownership recently(?)) --> but why not just add the
newsgroup: comp.protocols.appletalk to your news reader and you'll soon be
buried in information. Number one question to ask yourself though: Do
you want just AppleTalk routing between LocalTalk and Ethernet, or do you
also want DDP/IP encapsulation, that is, the ability for your Macs on
LocalTalk to use telnet?
