A previous call for discussion on this subject generated very little response, and only one slightly negative comment. I feel that the actual vote will generate more responses. Responses will be accepted as of Jan 5, until the end of the day on Feb 5. Send "yes" votes to yesvote@sco.COM Send "no" votes (or send no votes) to novote@sco.COM Sco speaks to uunet, sun, attctc, ucscc and a slew of other sites. Check your map entries for more details. Individual acknowledgements will *not* take place. I will send a mass acknowledgement on Jan 19, and (of course) at the final listing of voters. Charter and commentary follows: A number of people have become annoyed by the most recent "What are your X Favorite Albums" in rec.music.misc, as a discussion like this tends to occur every few months. I'm sure that this situation is similar in other groups. In addition, one user (whose name I don't recall) posts a list of "Most Commonly Cited Articles in comp.*". This is another list that has generated questions concerning whether it's worthwhile to even compile such a thing, much less post it to a number of newsgroups. To provide a place for such compilations of statistics to exist, I suggest that "talk.lists" be created, and all who wish to inquire about any of the above topics and any topics they happen to desire, should do so there. This will have the additional side effect of removing these lists (well, some of them) from the various newsgroups where they're generating controversy. In actuality *any* compiled list of information would be appropriate for this group, from the Complete List of {Smileys,Cows,LBJ's} to artist discographies, to illegally posted David Letterman Top 10 Lists (it's been confirmed that NBC does not want these posted; they claim a book of these is coming) to Arbitron ratings. There's probably no way to keep bothersome lists out of a particular group, but if the distribution is high enough, I think it will help a great deal. I've decided to honor those requests, and have refrained from posting any more. I can't see what special dispensation talk.lists would grant the posting of the Top 10 Lists, but then I'm just a humble-yet-lovable shoe-shine boy. (No, wait, that's someone else...)
