The US Naval Observatory has established a 900 number which can handle 8000 (??) lines into the master clock at one time. The number is 900-410-TIME Remember - .50c charge for the call... They claim that they have between 6 and 8000 calls per day into the clock, and that now they will be able to handle even more... Does the owner of a 900 number make any money off of the .50c? Does the owner subsidize the number? - Velu ----- News saved at Thu, 27-Oct-83 13:31:23 EDT The US Naval Observatory has established a 900 number which can handle 8000 (??) lines into the master clock at one time. I vaguely remember a news article on a "porno-phone" that said the 900 number paid for itself at 10,000 calls per month and any calls above that were worth something like .25 - 2 cents to the supplier. So you can see, you have to have a pretty popular service to make any money off a 900 number. I tried to find out if TPC had ever supported a modem-based 900 number (e.g., dumping the A.P. wire or some such) and never got a response. 't` --Tucker (ptw@vaxine.UUCP) ~
