I've had the US Robotics password modem for about a month, so now
I'm going to comment on it.
Cost: cheap (~$300)
Esthetics: I really enjoy
typing dialcodes into my terminal rather than picking up the phone,
trying 6 busy numbers in a row, and eventually getting a beep and
pressing the data button. It's down on the floor under my desk,
tangled up in the power and telephone wires, doesn't get in the way.
It's loud enough to hear it easily.
Problems: It seems to be much more susceptible to noise than my
"Genuine Bell" 212A; my terminal often gets filled up with
}}}}}}}}}s (generally not transmitted to the computer),
and occasionally I get kicked off (usually when I leave my
terminal on overnight.) It may be that the equalization
needs to be changed; I'll turn the "Balance" switch and see
if things improve.
Overall: Good, cheap, but I haven't used other auto-dialing modems
enough to make a real comparison.
