[net.dcom] Odd behavior with Hayes 1200

xx <-- how much disk space does it take to defeat this bug?
I've been seen several messages fly by regarding Hayes 1200 modems and
would like to add a question or two of my own.

At both 300 and 1200 baud I've experienced a strange kind of lock-up.
I'll be typing along at 1200 baud and all of a sudden see a pile of U's
come out on the terminal. At 300 baud, I'll see a bunch of UART errors
pop up (overrun and framing errors).

After things quiet down I find problems. At either rate I can't get
data out of the modem onto the phone line! At 300 baud I can't hear any
FSK'ing at all. I can command the modem via the escape sequence and read
out all the registers but thats about it. Incidentally, the modem says
it's not in self-test. Also, I can see the SD (send-data) LED blink but
am not getting any return echo from whatever I'm hooked to.

The modem says it's fine but nothing works. Has anyone else noticed
similar behaviour?
