The choice of IN% as the name of the PMDF mail interface IS using the name of the mail network and not the product. The network PMDF is usually attached to is the InterNet. Its a bit of a pain to type InterNet% in every address, so we chose the abbreviation IN%. It is a bad idea to use lots of different names. JNET does this and ends up generating lots of unrepliable addresses. As far as standardization goes, there is no central registry for these names. There is, however, a central registry run by Digital that foreign vendors are supposed to use to register the system logical names and system files their products use. (They also hand out unique facility codes for use with the MESSAGE utility.) PMDF is registered with this group; I do not know if JNET or any of the other foreign mail protocol handlers are similarly registered. Ned Freed ned@ymir.bitnet
