I'm the test engineer for the AT&T 212 modem. The bottom line is that Mel is correct: the data set has gone into test mode and is sending a dotting pattern which is 10101010... In 5-level baudot the pattern was RYRYRYRY instead of UUUUUUUU. Undetermined noise patterns (remember we're talking PSK) cause the data set to go into this test mode. Mel is also correct in telling you to disable the remote test switch. Hardly anyone calls the Telco to run remote data tests anymore. Tell your compcenter personnel to do the same.
