[comp.os.vms] WIN V/X

dorosz@ESDVAX.ARPA ("DAVE DOROSZ") (04/28/87)

I have some rather naive networking questions involving TCP/IP and VAXes.

1. Does VMS support TCP/IP through an ethernet interface (DEUNA/DELUA)?
If so, is any supporting software (third-party or otherwise) needed?

2. How does TCP/IP over a local area ethernet differ from TCP/IP on the
DDN? I know that the DDN uses TCP/IP as its protocol, but that everything
must go through an IMP. How does an IMP hook up to a VAX?

3. What do you get when you buy WIN/VX? I know you get the user programs
(telnet, ftp, etc.). Does WIN/VX provide the actual TCP/IP implementation
for the VAX? Does it come with any specialized hardware?

4. If WIN/VX provides a TCP/IP implementation, is it just for use with
the DDN or can it also work over an ethernet LAN?

Any informed replies (including pointers to documentation) would be appreciated.
Thanks.

YES, YOU CAN RUN TCP/IP ON A DEUNA BOARD. WOLLAGONG WIN V/X SUPPORTS THIS,
BUT YOU NEED TO BUY THE ETHERNET DRIVER FROM WOLLAGONG TO DO THIS.

THE BEST WAY TO GET THE VAX CONNECTED TO THE IMP IS WITH AN ADVANCED
COMMUNICATIONS CORP X.25 BOARD.

WIN/VX PROVIDES TCP/IP, TELNET, FTP,SMTP AND SOME OTHER SOFTWARE, SUCH AS
DIAGNOSTICS TO ENABLE YOU TO HAVE A FULLY OPERATIONAL DDN INTERFACE FOR
YOUR HOST. WOLLY ALSO SELLS THE ACC BOARD, IN FACT YOU CAN BUY THE WIN
VX SOFTWARE AND ACC BOARD FROM WOLLY OR ACC AS A PACKAGE DEAL.

WIN/VX DOES RUN ON ETHERNET PROVIDING YOU'RE USING TCP/IP PROTOCOL, NOT
XNS, AND YOU HAVE THE ABOVE MENTIONED OPTIONAL ETHERNET DRIVER SOFTWARE
FOR YOUR WIN/VX. THIS ALLOWS ANY HOST ON THE ETHERNET TO ALSO USE DDN.

DARRELL MCKEE OR JUDY NASSAR AT COMPUTER CENTER AT WPAFB CAN GIVE YOU MORE
INFO.
