Is there a way in VMS to write/read a tape that is compatible with the UN*X tar format? I'd prefer some pre-existing VMS utility such as COPY or BACKUP, but any *free* program would be wonderful... Advanced thanks, Ron Ueberschaer SRI International ...!{hplabs,rutgers}!sri-unix!ubi ubi@sri-unix

A while back, we picked a program called "vmstape" off of the net, and have been satisfied with its performance. We generate tapes on the UNIX side and read them on the VMS side using standard COPY. There is supposed to be a UNIX program that handles VMS backup format as well. I saw a reference in the mod.sources archive listing. -- Don |Raytheon Company, Submarine Signal Division, Portsmouth, RI Borsay |ARPAnet: d2b%rayssd.RAY.COM@a.cs.uiuc.edu |UUCPmail: {allegra, decvax!brunix, linus!raybed2}!rayssd!d2b
