[net.dcom] Can autodialing "wear out" a modem?

dave@utcsrgv.UUCP (Dave Sherman) (06/08/84)

I have a Racal-Vadic 212PA modem which I'm very happy with after
a year of use. I'm curious about something: will repeated dialing
decrease the life expectancy of the modem? Sometimes the system I'm
calling is down, and I leave the modem dialing forever until it gets
a connection. I wander back to the terminal once in a while to check
how it's doing. Will this eventually wear out the modem? Does it make
a difference whether it's touch-tone dialing or pulse dialing (when
in pulse dials, it gives out audible clicks so you can hear how it's
doing)?

The dialing/on-hook relay, which is what's used for pulse dialing,
definitely has a finite life. On the other hand, the folks who
designed the modem knew that said relay was going to be used for
dialing, so it's likely to be a long-life model. I wouldn't worry
too much, Dave; the main autodialer at utzoo, which is also an
R-V modem and probably uses the same relay, makes maybe a dozen calls
an hour, 24 hours a day 365 days a year. It's been operational for
two years now and is showing no signs of trouble.

If you're still concerned, tone dialing definitely would be easier
on the modem, since that's essentially an all-solid-state operation.

I wonder how your local Bell Operating Company feels about people
programming their modems to dial forever.

Who Cares what the phone company thinks? That is what we are paying
totally outrageous prices for, they don't have an opinion, you know,
like hired killers. As long as they get the money, they con't care.

Oh, bye the way, this is only a personal statement by me, a fed up
phone user, and not the policy of the UCSD Computer Center.

Maybe you figure that someone in the phone company would care about
infinite-loop dialing because they just like to make up silly
policies or because they are worried about equipment wearing out.
Don't worry about the equipment--it's designed for continuous
operation. But who loses if many people dial continuously?
YOU do--your calls won't go through because the leveraged resources
in the central office will be exhausted by the continued (fruitless)
dialing. Maybe you'd only be trying to call Mom to chat; but
then again, maybe it might be an emergency call.

Don't be considerate for the phone company's sake--do it for yourself
and for your neighbors.
