[net.dcom] How to stop terminals from being stolen

dave@uwvax.ARPA (07/19/84)

We use a method similar to that being suggested here. Our method is to
run two extra wires to the terminal (nothing actually uses all 25 pins
-- most applications can get away with 3, some need 8) and just loop
all of them together in series. The loop ends in a very loud bell (I
think from a fire-alarm, but I'm not sure) which goes off when the
connection breaks. Right now it doesn't have disconnect-a-single-tty
hardware, so the whole thing gets turned off when something is worked
on. Of course, you can turn the thing off, add a loopback and turn
it on again. There is always the problem of someone else doing the
latter, but if you must turn off the alarm manually and protect the
connectors (like filling them with plastic or some such substance) it
should make it difficult for anyone to rip the thing off.
