I am completely ignorant of all VMS related matters but have been asked to ascertain whether it is possible to exchange mail between machines running "vanilla" VMS mail products and the UNIX and TOPS-20 Internet hosts running the all-to-familiar (to me) mail programs. I realize the traffic in this group implies that this is being done daily, my question, more clearly stated is, what is needed for someone who has a running stand-alone VMS system and an unused MILNET PSN port to start exchanging Internet mail. Also, can all-in-one mail be brought into this mix? Thanks in advance, Glen Foster

Re: another Naive VMS mail question As a rather new user to VMS I would like to know if mail can be forwarded to another system by using mailer! for instance if I want my mail to be forwarded here to the WELL (a unix machine) I do the following set forward mailer!<well!kdavis@lll-lcc.arpa> but it doesn't seem to work. Bounces all mail. Thanks for the help! (please no flames, I am a VMS neophyte and our systems administrator doesn't have the answer) -- Ken Davis {ptsfa, lll-crg, hoptoad}!well!lamc!kdavis kdavis@optimis-pent.arpa "I spent the coldest winter of my life one summer in San Francisco." Bounces all mail. Of course it doesn't work. You must use a valid mail address in your forwarding address, and "mailer!anything" works out to simply "mailer" since ! is a comment character. If you have a way to mail anything to the other system (e.g., your UNIX machine is actually an ULTRIX machine with DECnet, or you have something like the Software Tools mailer that can talk protocols other than MAIL-11), then just use the address format that works for that when you specify your forwarding address.

I have never heard of 'mailer', but I suspect you need to put quote marks around your forwarding address. Try this as a stab in the dark: set forward mailer%"""<well!kdavis@lll-lcc.arpa>""" (this assumes 'mailer' is a protocol and not a node name) If 'mailer' is a node name, then maybe try this: set forward mailer::"""<well!kdavis@lll-lcc.arpa>""" I am interested in hearing what finally works. ...Barron -------

What is it? it is a bogus user that can receive mail. Once every X minutes it takes all that mail it has and sends it out to the ethernet. It uses the *COMMENT* field of the to: field to get an adress. Thus mailer!mende@aramis.rutgers.edu is received by mailer as to: mailer!mende@aramis.rutges.edu it then strips off the mailer! and wala... there is an address. the problem with this is that the comment field is just that ... and VMS mail will not pass such useless data on in a forward. Thus if you SET FOR mailer!"""mende@aramis.rutgers.edu""" VMS mail will show that mail is forwarded to mailer!"mende@aramis"... but it will only mail to mailer. I have hacked for days on end on trying to get mail forwarded off a system like this with no luck ... if anyone does know how ... *PLEASE* post it or mail it to me and I will post it... You can forward mail from VMS to Ultrix (or any other machine on the network). Within VMS mail, you need to get enough quote marks to allow the secondary evaluation of the string when the mail forwarding takes place to yield the correct answer. If you can send mail to the host from vms you can forward mail to it. You may just need to adjust the additional quote marks to make it work. * *---Art * *Arthur T. I believe I understand what's happening here. An earlier message from Hal Brand explained it more completely then I have the time to do, but the MAILER syntax is used in the VMS mail to SMTP interface in Wollongong TCP/IP. And there is no way to either SET FORWARD or use a logical in this syntax. That is because the MAILER program looks at the contents of the `To:' line in the actual mail message for the address. If a logical is used then the logical name, not its translation is placed on the `To:' line. Similarly the forwarding address is not placed in the message text, so forwarding does not work. The only available shortcut is to place the `To:' text on the MAIL command line. This isn't much of a help. I would suggest looking at the PMDF mailer as a substitute for the Wollongong one. Wollongong has promised to re-do their mailer in the next few months, so maybe that one will be better. R.
