Some time ago I posted a question about using tellabs multiplexors with
a VAX running 4.1 BSD. It appeared that when a user logged out
the tellabs would not recognize the connection was ended and keep
it busy forever. I got several suggestions but what I ended up doing
(and have been successfully using for several weeks) was to put
a sleep in init and set the drop DTR on close bit. This held down
DTR long enough for the tellabs to see it, closing the connection.
Without the sleep, DTR would drop and come back too quickly for
the tellabs to see it reliably, although it would often work.
