[net.dcom] High Speed Serial point-to-point links for VAX/4.2bsd

menges@unc.UUCP (John Menges) (08/07/84)

I'm interested in the experiences of anyone who is
familiar with any unibus interfaces to high-speed
(19.2Kbaud to 1Mbaud) point to point serial communications
lines. I'm especially interested in anything anyone has
done over fiber optics cables, but want to hear about
twisted copper pair too. Has anyone had much experience
with using ABLE VMZs at 19.2Kbaud or DEC DMR-11s?
What else is available? How reliable is it? What
software is available? What's the cost?
I run 4.2bsd on vaxes in 6 scattered buildings on campus
and want to improve our 4.2bsd network communications
speeds. We currently run the network over twisted pair
between VMZs at 9600 baud (can't get 19.2Kbaud to work
right).
