[comp.os.vms] tcp/ip cpu usage of the Wolongong package

kieffer%Ucnet.UNCA.AdhocNet.CA@UNCAEDU.BITNET (06/25/87)

We finished installing tcp/ip a few days ago on a 780 under vms 4.5

I noticed that the inet_servers process is quite active, using up to 18%
of the CPU (as displayed with mon proc/topcpu) for short periods of time,
but at least 3 to 5 times a minute. That does not sound right, especially
since there is no activity on the link to the ethernet when we monitor the
process.

at the same time I would like to ask whether there is anybody around who
has successfully installed the files used to define the gateways to
other ethernet subnets whose numerical id's differ from the local id.
(hosts. , networks. , protocols. , etc)
we ended up adding a default route to all those other hosts via a vax
which knew about the remainder of the hosts. That works but it is not
the way I would like to operate, for example if the default host is
shut down we loose 90% of the network visible to this computer.

We are running an older version (2.2) of the package, it has been around for
a while but was put to use only now, and for lack of funds I cannot
get a service contract with Wolongong. They gave us some freebees, but I
have exhausted those. Any information would be most welcome.
