I read in EE Times that apparently Intel has dropped its Merlan proposal in favor of Cheapernet. Still a contender for IEEE approval is ATT's S LAN, which uses "already installed twisted-pair telephone cables". I wasn't aware there was that much extra capacity in my telephone cables. Anyone from ATT care to comment? -- amd70 is dead, tell a friend Phil Ngai (408) 982-6554 UUCPnet: {ucbvax,decwrl,ihnp4,allegra,intelca}!amd!phil ARPAnet: amd!phil@decwrl.ARPA

I work for a company that has been profitably selling a telephone line modem for several years. Our vax and pyramid serial ports go out to the modem. At my desk there is a modem. Out of the modem comes two cables. One cable is RS232 to the 9600 baud terminal I'm on, the other a regular modular phone cord. I can talk and compute at 9600 baud at the same time. This means NO extra wiring in our new building. There is plenty of bandwidth on the phone lines. teltone!warren
