[net.dcom] Modem problems

tjr@ihnet.UUCP (Tom Roberts) (04/10/84)

We have had a modem problem, too; the modem locks up whenever ^g is received.
This causes the modem to go into its self-test mode, with resulting chaos.
Internally, we found a jumper that would prevent this - read your documentation!
(I forget which modem this was, but I think that a lot of modems do this -
an example of compatibility mania!).

Could you possibly give me some hints here? We have a 751, with a pair
of ABLE VMZ/32N muxes sitting off the back. I have a ventel, as well
as a vadic 3451 modem. I am trying to get netnews up by talking with
rlgvax, as well as make arpanet connections for people who dial up
TACs. I have been able to use the modems connected to a terminal and
dial up both the TACs and rlgvax without any problem. I have been able
to use the modems to dial up our own system (we have ventel modems for
answering), but ... I cannot use either the ventel or the vadic modem
to dial out to rlgvax or to any TACs connected when connected to our
ABLE. I can use either the ventel or the vadic to call back to our
system (the other ventels) with no trouble.

The rlgvax and TAC modems are 3451, or vadic 3400 compatible.

How do I get the ventel, while connected to our vax, to call rlgvax, or
any of the TACs? I'm really stumped. The ABLE says that it supports
modem control for Bell 103, 212a, but not vadic 3400. Is it unable to
support 3400 that you know of? Is there some other mux that we have to
get in order for it to support 3400? Does anybody else that you know
of have similar problems / configurations, etc.?

I can't send anything out to netnews to help solve this problem,
because if I could, I wouldn't have to!

Thanks.
