I am considering purchasing the ProModem 1200 by Prometheus. It has numerous features over the Haye but I haven't seen any reviews of the modem and there aren't any local distributors who have any. Anyone have any comments? Rudy Bazelman Wang Institute/Labs

If you are considering the Promodem 1200, you choose well. I have had mine for 3 months, and have found it to be reliable and very compatible with the Hayes Smartmodem 300 which I used to use. Even the cabling is the same. The Promodem does have a few extra status prompts in its 'verbose' mode, so I had to alter my login macros for my terminal program. I played with the extra features, but not enough to say anything about them. I like the fact that the Promodem stores and keeps time, and it will automatically redial a busy number every 30 seconds. Also, this modem is cheaper than a Hayes, and is about the same price as the US Robotics, and only the Signalman is cheaper. Another feature I like is the ability to switch from tone to rotary mode within the same call, and it can also wait for a secondary dial tone. Since I just got my Sprint number, I really appreciate the added intelligence, which makes it more useful than my Hayes, even if it would go 1200 baud. Phil Julian mcnc!ecsvax!julian
