[comp.os.vms] LAVC and dual ported RA81

briggs%gburg.DECnet@BLUTO.SCC.COM ("GBURG::BRIGGS") (07/08/87)

Caller asks about NOCRC on backup using GCR drive from a 730.

Since GCR drives do checksum in hardware, you don't need to do a checksum
in software as well. We are doing /NOCRC backups here (on an 8650/TA78) without
problems. With a 730, you should see a large speedup by turning off the CRC.

Caller also mentions a 7 node LAVC using an 8530 as the boot node.

It was my understanding that the ethernet adapter on the BI machines did not
support local area VAX clusters. Certainly performance is going to suffer
with that particular ethernet interface.

Finally caller asks about dual porting an RA81 between two UDA50 controllers.

This won't work the way you want it to. Dual porting on DSA drives is static.
Only one controller can be active at a time and you can't toggle access back
and forth rapidly as is done with dual ported MASSBUS disks on a cluster.
You can $ DISMOUNT/NOUNLOAD the disk from one CPU and then $ MOUNT the disk
from the other CPU. You just can't have both mounted at the same time.
