[comp.os.vms] Question Of Ethernet Bridges Causing Printer Queueing Problems...

Question From TSO Financial...

We have a Ethernet network that is both large and convoluted. It is spread
between 10 buildings along the east coast and is shipped via Timeplex T1 links
and Vitalink bridges to the various locations. There are also sections of fiber
optic and we are looking to microwave for the next segment. On this network in
the various buildings are located DECserver 100 and 200's.

If that was not bad enough we appear to have a problem that I am curious if
some else also has and/or more information on it.

The problem occurs when a power failure or phone line problem hits a
building/network segment that is on the far side of a Vitalink bridge, and
there are/were printers and associated queues that use those printers. The
manifestation is that ALL print jobs to the printers on that segment of the
network ABORT the jobs with an error code that says the device, LTAXXX:, is
an invalid device. The work around we have to date is to stop the impacted
queues and then restart them while specifing the /ON= parameter. After that
is done, things appear to be normal again. The LTAXXX numbers NEVER change
and start at 700 so that there are NO conflicts at system boot time. They
are also the same on ALL systems to stop any confusion. We are running VMS
4.5 and the latest LAT Plus software.

My gut feeling is that the bridge is screwing up the passing of packets or
LATSYM is getting notification, or lack of it, that a device is out there.

Anyone else have this problem or similar ones??

Thanks in advance for help on this.
