[comp.os.vms] Question On Tape And WORM Storage Subsystems...

Question From TSO Financial...

I am currently looking into two areas of storage that are not talked about
to much so far. The first is LARGE tape systems, and optical disks (WORMS).

I have talked to one person who has a tape system from Emulex called the
MEGATAPE which comes in two models. The MDC-750 and MDC-500. The 750 version
puts 600+MB FORMATTED on ONE tape cartridge. This would solve the MANY reels
of tape that is currently being used. The individual has the system on a
Q-BUS MicroVAX and said that he can do a full RA-81 in less then 45 minutes.
Thats fast. Thats also what I am looking for.

Does anyone else have this tape system and how is it behaving?? What kind
of timing for backing up the disks do you have??

The other question deals with WORMS. I have been doing the rounds of sales
people and getting my facts straight. Does anyone have WORMS in use, what
make and any problems that have occured to date.

Thanks in advance for help on this.

I have to wonder about a drive that packs 600meg onto one cartridge. We're
talking a 600' tape cartridge as used in Sun's, HP's, and the mysterious
TK25, right? How reliable over time is a drive that packs one meg onto *one
foot* of tape going to be? Okay, I just realized that the drive lays down
multiple tracks, but I'm still w

The one I saw advertised uses VHS videotapes.
