We are a University with not enough disk space for all our users (does anyone??). Until now, we have dealt with this problem by deleting all files not accessed for some time, usually six months, but sometimes as short as two months. The problem with this is that some files are only used once a year, and therefore disappear with regular monotony and have to be retrieved from backups. One answer we are considering is an archive scheme. What we would like is for the system manager to be able to archive files according to some criteria, and the user could retrieve a file (semi-)automatically by issuing a command. It would be even better if users could specify files to be archived or not archived by listing them in a file or some other means. I am therefore asking for information about archiving systems to run on VMS, commercial or public domain, and hopefully doing as outlined above. Any and all suggestions will be gratefully received. Comments on performance, problems, quirks, etc will also be useful. As usual, if there are enough replies, I will summarise. PS If this has been thrashed out before on the net, could someone just send me a summary. Thanks.
