I seem to recall reading somewhere (I thought it was INFO-VAX, but can't find the posting) about an upgrade to TK50 drives that fixes the problem where if you try to perform an operation on the tape while there's not actually a tape ready in the drive, you lose the drive at least until the system is rebooted (only shutting off power to the system for a substantial length of time is guaranteed to make the drive usable again). I know that the problem has been fixed in more recent drives (the most recent VAXstation to arrive here doesn't have the problem). Is there in fact an upgrade to the older drives that fixes the problem? If so, what is the upgrade number? Thanks.

The fix to older tk50's does exist. It is simply a matter of replacing the ROMs on the controller. You can ask for the ECO to be applied by your DEC service person. They don't consider it serious enough to do it unless you ask although they will probably do it if doing other work on the drive (that's how I found out about it) -- Randy Buckland Research Triangle Institute rcb@rti.rti.org [128.109.139.2] {decvax,ihnp4,seismo}!mcnc!rti-sel!rcb
