[comp.os.vms] This too-long-lived hacker debate...

STEWART_SYS@uta.EDU (Dan Stewart) (07/27/87)

PLEASE, enough on the definitions and debates on hackers and programmers! You
could easily argue the definition of any word, and have different viewpoints.
Everyone has their own idea of what a hacker is and isn't, and I don't think
going back and forth about it for two weeks is a very useful way to be
shuffling these bits around the world. This is nearly as ridiculous as the
Unix/VMS competition of a couple months ago!

As for the one who seems to be the judge on what is a stupid question and what
warrants looking through the manual, are you sure that your questions to the
net aren't boring everyone else...? I'm in the process of learning a few
things about Unix, and I certainly hope that the 'experts' I ask aren't so
impatient as to throw manuals at me rather than share something that may be
simple to them. Let's remember that there is are very many levels of knowledge
and expertise on this net. There's no need for the ones who may be at a higher
level to become cocky about it. There is probably no question that could be
asked that would not be thought 'stupid' by someone.
