Does anyone know of a protocol, proposed or in use, that implements reliable datagrams (suitable for use by a transaction system) within the TCP/IP protocol suite? The ARPANET RDP protocol is just confusingly named, since it's intended for something completely different. Something similar to the XNS PXP protocol might be appropriate. Has anyone implemented PXP on top of IP? Are there any inherent problems in doing that? Does the upcoming ISO protocol suite have a similar protocol? Has anyone done an analysis of the tradeoffs between using such an RDP/PXP protocol and just using TCP? In other words, has someone already decided to use TCP for a transaction system, and if so, why? Mark Horton ucbvax!cbosgd!mark mark@Berkeley.ARPA
