This request was sent to INFO-VAX 3 weeks ago. Since I never got back the
mail message from INFO-VAX, I think that it has never been distributed to
the net.

When we try to erase a large magtape (small ones seem to work !) with the
command INIT/ERASE on our TA81, we get the following error messages, after
the tape has been wound to EOT and back to BOT.
"Volume not completely erased
Abort
Fatal drive error"
After that the tape unit cannot be used any more till we turn off the power !
All commands like INIT or MOUNT are rejected with the message "Volume is not
software enabled".
We run VMS 4.5 and the tape unit is connected to a HSC50. I will submit an SPR,
but I don't like to wait until I might get an answer in 1988 ... Any ideas ?
