I have just installed the CMU TCP/IP package (version 6.2), and I have come up with an interesting problem. I can't get the name server to work. All of the clients (FTP, Telnet, etc) work great if you give them a numeric IP address, but nothing works when given a machine name, even if it is the name of the local machine! Other bits of evidence I have gathered include: - When I try something like "ftp machine", I can see the connection with "netstat", showing as being in a "name-lookup" state. - The IPACP does not always seem to go to the name server...I have not figured out the exact pattern yet, but some addresses just time out without the server ever being consulted (as seen by watching the operation count on MBX$NAMSRV and the NAMSRV log file), while others do involve the server. - The name server does not seem to use the HOSTS.TXT file, although I have verified that it does (sometimes) open that file. Has anybody else seen a problem of this sort? Any hints as to what I have done wrong would be much appreciated. I saw a question about the existence of a mailing list for CMU TCP/IP, but no answer. Is there, by any chance, such a list? -- Jonathan Corbet {seismo | hplabs | gatech}!hao!gaia!jon {ucbvax | allegra | cbosgd}!nbires!gaia!jon
