*** REPLACE THIS LINE WITH YOUR MESSAGE *** Folks - Are there people out there that would like to discuss issues related to Africa? In particular, I would like us to discuss issues related to the following questions: 1. Communication problems for Africa and how can we solve the problems? 2. Why is Africa not progressing technologically? 3. Why is most African governments unstable? 4. Are there solutions to the drought problems? If there are, how can we influence the policy makers in the affected countries? 5. Other interesting topics. Please post your support or rejection in this newsgroup or mail your response directly to me. Thanks. Wale Akinpelu AT&T Bell Laboratories hou2a!link!aaa 2B-201 x0644

This is definitely one of the best new.group suggestion I have seen. It may be that a net.(region) group will form for every region; indeed, probably should form for those of us greatly interested in problems of particular regions. If this is to be the case, then it would be fitting to make net.africa the first: It is more foreign to most, poses more complex problems, and has arguably suffered more from western actions then other region. The group would also have a range wide enough to allow new discussions to form regularly. This group fills any qualifications you can come up with. A DEFINITE YES VOTE, if you were still wondering. You can consider this a *yes* vote for net.whatever.africa. Bravo, Wale-I find myself wondering how many other Africans are out there on the net, and this will be a good chance to find out. Also, the whole political and cultural situation (what *is* Chief Ebeneezer Obey singing about, anyway?) is so entirely different from anything in my experience that I'd welcome the chance to learn a little more. -- ________________________________________________________________________________ Once I was young:once I was smart:now I'm living on the edge of my nerves:-Japan Gregory Alan Taylor:162 Clark Hall:Cornell University:Ithaca,NY 14850:USA USENET: {cmcl2,decvax,ihnp4}!cornell!lasspvax!gtaylor ARPANET: gtaylor@lasspvax.arpa BITNET: gtaylor@crnlthry.bitnet ________________________________________________________________________________

Another yes vote for net.wherever.africa. As one of the Columbia University blockaders trying to convince our University to disinvest from companies doing business in South Africa (Azania), I know that most Americans (and probably Europeans as well) are woefully ignorant of conditions and problems in Africa. A newsgroup is certainly justified. One of the more interesting sidelights of the current action at Columbia is the electronic bulletin board debate taking place on Columbia's academic computer systems. The debate has for the most part been high-level (i.e. high S/N ratio, low flamage content) despite the great emotional force of the arguments on both sides, and has certainly raised the awareness of those who read it, although it probably has convinced few on either side. Interestingly, some of the blockaders have printed out most of the articles and posted them in a nearby dormitory, so that the debate is even reaching those without computer access. @alex
