Hello Folks,
Several people requested that I post a summary of replies to my query
on inexpensive thick to thin ethernet. Here goes . . .
The following manufacturers of ethernet hardware were suggested:
Hewlett-Packard Bridge Communications
2081 Stierlin Road
Mountain View, California 94043 USA
Phone: 415-969-4400
Micom-Interlan Inc. Cabletron Systems Inc.
155 Swanson Road P.O. Box 6257
Boxborough, Massachusetts 01719 East Rochester, N.H. 033867-6257
Phone: 617-263-9929 (603)332-9400
I haven't called these people myself for specific info yet, but I will be
contacting them in the near future.
The bulk of the replies were of the nature 'Buy a $10.00 type N to
BNC Inline reducer. It ain't supported but it's cheap and works'. In many
cases this will be a reasonable solution. One reply contained a handy
formula for determining if you are exceeding the ethernet length
limitation. It goes something like this:
IF ((thick_length) + (3 * thin_length) .LT. 500M)
THEN say "you should be ok"
ELSE say "Noooo way Hose!"
Alas, when I ran this code I got:
$ run mirror_mirror_on_the_wall_who's_the_longest_one_of_all
thick_length (in meters)?: 500 <CR>
thin_length (in meters)?: 1 <CR>
Noooo way Hose!
$
Many thanks to all who replied. All replies were much appreciated.
P.S. Bill Hancock gave a most humorous talk entitled "Understanding
Ethernet" at Spring DECUS. He highly recommended a book on ethernet at the
time. Anyone remember what it was? It's high time I did some reading on
the subject.
regards++
