Have you wanted to: 1) Do idle logoff. 2) Schedule priorities so no one can hog the CPU. 3) Suspend low priority batch jobs if memory usage is high. 4) Issue a wake-up call without submitting a batch job. 5) Dynamically change SYS$ANNOUNCE to show system load and memory usage. 6) Have a background process stop and start queues during certain times of the day (instead of having batch jobs do it). 7) Change system time at daylight savings twice a year. 8) Disable any device from being used by having a background process allocate the device. and more...then you'll be wanting a Nanny for you own VMS VAX. In addition to the above, Nanny will also spawn detach processes at requested time periods (like UN*X Cron) running special command procedures you specify. All of this will be available for Nanny V2.3 coming October 1. Nanny is written entirely in FORTRAN and should run on all VMS V4.*. If you haven't signed up with the list Nanny-Users, do so now. Send me mail at Zar@XHMEIA.Caltech.Edu (internet) Zar@CITCHEM (Bitnet) XHMEIA::ZAR (span/hepnet) Remember: A VAX without a Nanny is like a child without a mother. (sad but true). From The Great Zar
