The University of Florida has several diskless Vaxstation 2000 workstations in a local segment which is bridged to a campuswide ethernet environment. Periodically the Vaxstations just stop communicating with the server (11/750 VMS 4.5) and must be rebooted to resume operation. It appears that the amount of traffic (especially IP) on the ethernet affects the amount of uptime . (OR lack thereof ). We have talked to DEC about this problem, and they say that a problem does exist with VMS4.5 and the cluster environment, but are vague at best and offer no fix. Dec says to buy VMS4.6 when available. Nevertheless, we are quite pissed about the lack of a solution. Can the magic mystical wizards in Netland tell us what the REAL problem is with the Vaxstation/cluster/VMS4.5 interaction (or lack of) and if anything can be done. It is unproductive to reboot once per hour. Does anyone want to buy some used Vaxstation 2000's REAL CHEAP ?? In disgust .. From the Network Control Center .. Sonny@beach.cis.ufl.edu
