[comp.os.vms] Powering up a unibus with the system running

CHR%UTRC@untech.utc.COM (Chuck) (10/20/87)

Greetings,

I am a system manager of a VAXcluster which includes a VAX 8650 with two
unibuses(nexus 3 and 4). The power supply which supplies power to unibus 4
went bad and caused unibus 4 to go offline. We noticed this when the DECnet
link to the LAN went down as well as our line printers, all the devices in
unibus 4.

I called DEC and the bad power supply was replaced with the system running.
The trouble started when DEC tried to reboot the system. A RMS error was
reported when the STARTUP.COM file executed the site specific SYSTARTUP.COM
file. This error was '%RMS-F-IRC, illegal record encountered; VBN or record
number = 1'. I used VFE(the virtual file editor to dump the file).

This is the first 128 bytes of SYSTARTUP.COM ....

I also dumped the SYLOGIN.COM and BIMAP.SYS files.

This is SYLOGIN.COM ....

This is the BITMAP.SYS for our common system disk ....

(same for rest of block 1)

Please note that UTRCV1 is the DECnet node name for the VAX 8650 and that
'VAXVMSRL4' should be in the BITMAP.SYS where 'UTRCV1' is.

Our DEC field service folks tell us that they have not seen a test pattern
that resembles what was found in SYLOGIN.COM or SYSTARTUP.COM. The hsc that
controls the system disk($1$DUA0) did not record any errors for the system
disk. VMS 4.6 is run off the system disk.
