[comp.os.vms] Installing RX02 drives on mVax II

hcn1@sphinx.uchicago.edu (howard charles nusbaum) (10/26/87)

I have been trying to install RX02 floppy drives on my
MicroVax II with little luck. The EXCHANGE program
claims that it will take RT-11 files from RX02 floppies
and turn them into VMS files. Since we have a large
group of RX02 floppies (and a spare RX02 drive with DMA
Q-bus controller) I thought I would use my MicroVax II
to make these files continually accessible. Intalling
the hardware seemed to work fine. Unfortunately, when
running AUTOCONFIGURE in SYSGEN I got the message that
the system can't find the DYDRIVER.EXE file.

Indeed, I can't find the DYDRIVER.EXE file anyplace
on our system and AUTOCONFIGURE apparently needs this
to set up the device. Does its absence mean I can't
use RX02 floppies on a MicroVax? Or does MicroVMS 4.4
not support the DYDRIVER? Or is it possible to get
the DYDRIVER from some other source? I would appreciate
any help you can give me with this problem.

MicroVMS doesn't include DYDRIVER.EXE. Since DYDRIVER is licensed software,
probably the only way you could (legally) get a copy is to buy full VMS.
In fact, you should get full VMS anyway; it's much better than MicroVMS
(assuming you have the available disk space), if only because the full
help libraries come with it.

I just checked my vms system and it has the dydriver.exe. This
may be one of the files that digital 'just didn't bother copying' to
uVMS since 'no one has rx02's on a microvax.." if this is the case, you
quite likely have a legal license for it and could simply copy it from
another vms system.

HOWEVER!!!!!!!! the flip side is that the dydriver might be considered like
the tsdriver (for tsv05 mag tape) as an EXTRA COST option for uVMS...

the only safe thing is to call the sales rep ( good luck ) and get them
to commit to letting you copy the dydriver over.

You are correct about not having the DYDRIVER in microvms. I
have been told that as of version 5.0, DEC will dispense with
the microvms distinction, and distribute only VMS with all its
glory (device drivers etc...). Getting back to the question of
using DEC RX02's in a microvax, assuming you did get DYDRIVER, I
dont think that it will work. The reason being: the RXV21 (M8029)
floppy interface card was built before the Q22 bus was around, hence
I believe its only an 18 bit interface card. This is only conjecture
since I dont know for sure. Check it out anyway.
