Since V4.0 of VMS files created by a process with a system UIC or SYSPRIV will have as owner the UIC of the parent directory in which the file was created/modified. When I first noted the 'problem' I called Colorado and I was told it was a feature and would not change in the near future. The above stated 'feature' makes it very, very hard to identify who last modified systems files. I have ignored the situation until now since we have a very small support staff. We are now off-loading some system responsibility to addition people. We do not trust these people to always make rational and educated changes so we wish to keep track of who does what to which file (mainly on the system disk). We do not use audit trails and setting security produces too much unneeded information. How does one get around VMS (RMS) feature of assigning ownership of a file to the parent directory UIC when using an account with a system UIC or SYSPRIV? Many thanks, - Andy Grigor ------
