[ Food for the line eater ] A while back I spent quite a few nights debugging a system I had installed in New Zealand, from Norwood MA. It was invariably true that if I dialed them up, the connection was unusable, but if they rang me, we could transmit for hours without problems. This was all at 4800 using phone company equipment over normal dialup lines here, and standard post office equipment in N.Z. I never did understand why. Then again, I wasn't selling modems so I didn't really care too much either.
