[comp.os.vms] TK50 Errors

CURLEY@WHARTON.UPENN.EDU ("Curley, Robert F.") (10/31/87)

Greetings from Philly,

Yesterday I got 1600+ errors when writing one TK50 tape with
my 780. Field Service agreed that the drive was ill and replaced it.
Today, with the new drive, I got 54 errors using BACKUP/NOVERIFY on
three tapes. ("Data sync not found - data sync timeout" according to
Vaxsim) Field Service says that 54 errors on three tapes is NORMAL.

Any suggestions or advice or confirmation?

Thanks,
	--Bob Curley

On our MicroVAX II with a TK50 we would normally get about somewhere
around 300 to 400 errors a month. The amount of errors will be
different from tape to tape. We usally use BACKUP/VERIFY when we
do backups and on the verify cycle it reports no differences
between the disk and the tape. Also when we do restores from the
TK50's we have no problem recovering the data (of course the amount
of restores we do is small compared to the number of backups that
we do).

I kinda of agree that 1600+ errors on one TK50 is pretty steep.
