[comp.os.vms] Ethernet software problems on LAVC systems

ted@blia.UUCP (11/05/87)

I have a problem that I don't have the time or the resources to solve and
I am hoping that someone on the net may have run into it before and have
some additional insight.

I maintain a driver/ACP that speaks XNS through the DEC standard Ethernet
interfaces and drivers on VMS. As far as I know, it has been installed
on just about all combinations of VAX model and Enet interface with no
problems.

However, recently, a customer tried to install it on an 8350 with a DEBNT
(or maybe a DEBNA, I couldn't get the exact information) which already had
DECnet, LAT and LAVC software running on the DEBNT (ETA0: specifically).
When my XNS ACP starts up and tries to do a setmode start-up on the port,
the ET driver returns SS$_INSFMEM (Insufficient Dynamic Memory). My first
thought was, of course, he's out of pool! Nope. SHOW MEMORY shows at least
1/2 megabyte free in both paged and non-paged pool.

I also tried running a little test program which opens a port with the XNS
protocol type, max receive buffer size = 1500, no pad, and everything else
default. Same error.

All of this forces me to conclude that one of two things is wrong. Either
there is something incompatible between LAVC software and my software or
the ET driver will only handle "n" ports at a time, where n = ~6. Neither
really explains the error code, but I can't think of anything else.

I have neither a VAX with a DEBNT nor the LAVC software in-house. Also, my
fiche is only version 4.4 so I can't look at the ET driver. Therefore, I
don't feel I can go much further on my own.

Any input on this problem would be appreciated. Please e-mail to me (addresses
in my signature below); I will summarize to the net if I receive anything
significant.

Thank you in advance to everyone.
