[comp.os.vms] Standalone backup

STREIFF@HARTFORD.BITNET (06/01/87)

Hi,

We have a Vax 11/780 running VMS4.5 and are presently trying
to figure out how to put the contents of the standalone boot floppys
onto one of our other disk drives. We do a standalone backup/restore
every month and it would be alot easier if we didnt have to switch the
floppys all of the time. (if youve ever done standalone on a 780 youll
apreciate this, the only thing thats slower is maybe standalone off of
a TU58 on our 750). Has anyone done this? We havent started yet, im just
trying to get info on if it can be done and how.

Also has anyone been able to send a message from bitnet to
tek.com. Were using gmail and our message was rejected from the wiscvm
mailer.

                                        Thanks,

To create a new version of standalone backup, use the procedure STABACKIT
in SYS$UPDATE.

Don't use GMAIL (it's slow and has been known to use inappropriate machines
as gateways). The mailer we use here for non-VMS mail is the Software Tools
mailer. The person currently maintaining it at Caltech is ZAR@XHMEIA, and
he can probably tell you where to get a copy.

Look at your sysmanager manual and read about sys$update:stabackit.com.
This is a procedure for installing a copy of standalone backup in the syse
directory for avoiding having to load it from floppies or tu58. You can
figure it out from the procedure if needed.

How are you going to put the image backups of your system disk back onto
your system disk if your system disk has crashed and you have no operating
system. The stand-alone backup is the minimal operating system you need,
and without it you CANNOT restore your system disk. There are lots of other
things, like VMS upgrade failures that can render your system disk inoperable
and make you thankful for your stand-alone backup.
