I am trying to find an auto-dialing modem with call progress tone detection. Specifically it should be able to sense: dial tone ringing (at either end) busy signal reorder signal (circuits busy) call waiting tone It should also be able to sense loop current to check for a dead line and/or for disconnect. Anybody know of anything that can do all (or most of) this? A number of modems claim to do this, but note that some botch it. There
is a great deal of variation in what tone signal means what, especially
when PBXes enter the picture. My own conclusion -- bearing in mind that
I'm a phone/modem user rather than designer -- was that the general problem
is so hard that probably no modem does it 100% correctly.
I have no specific pointers, except that I know that some (all?) Cermetek
products -- which are also sold by other companies under different names --
misinterpret the "ringing" signal of at least one major PBX as "busy".

The Racal-Vadic 212PA does a pretty good job of detecting call progress. On the whole, it correctly identifies "NO ANSWER", "DIAL TONE", "RINGING", "BUSY" and "VOICE". And if it doesn't get a dial tone for the call, it will let you know too. Dave Sherman Toronto -- {utzoo pesnta nrcaero utcs hcr}!lsuc!dave {allegra decvax ihnp4 linus}!utcsri!lsuc!dave
