GIH900@FAC.anu.OZ.AU (Geoff Huston) (11/24/87)
Two weeks ago I posted an item to info-vax announcing the release of NEWS, Version 4 for VAX/VMS, and asked for ideas on how to distribute the code. My thanks to those who have replied so far (I will reply individually as soon as possible). My apologies in being somewhat slow in posting this followup item, but e-mail turnaround to Australia is not that quick at present. I have come up with the following distribution arrangements: To obtain a copy of NEWS - You may either obtain a copy of NEWS over VAX PSI, or I can send you a tape, or you can obtain a copy from a site that already has a copy of NEWS. - To obtain a copy using PSI please send a mail request to the address: PSI%0505262440032::GIH900 I will mail back a program called PSI_BOOT (in Pascal). When this code is compiled and executed it will download a PSI file copy utility called PSI_COPY. Using PSI_COPY you then obtain over PSI a decompression program, and then obtain a copy of the (compressed) NEWS sources and object files. Full details of this procedure will be mailed to you. By using PSI, you will be charged the traffic costs for collecting the files (by your friendly local PSI carrier). There is some 340 blocks of compressed sources, and 340 blocks of compressed object files (not necessary if you have the VAX C compiler). You will also need to obtain the PSI_COPY and decompression executables over PSI, which is a further 350 blocks (or so). - Another option is to request me to send you a tape. This will cost $100 (Australian dollars), and I will air mail you a tape of NEWS (The $100 covers the cost of the tape, packaging and first class air mail postage) - please DON'T send me a tape - we have been experiencing some problems with incoming tapes with Australian Customs. Please send the request by letter to the address below, and enclose a cheque for $100 in Australian dollars (that works out to about $69 US!) made out to: Computer Services Centre, ANU and address the letter to: Geoff Huston Computer Services Centre Australian National University GPO Box 4, Canberra, ACT 2601 AUSTRALIA - The last option is to obtain a copy from another site running NEWS. It is a condition of NEWS that you make NEWS available to other sites on request (and can charge reasonable distribution costs for this re-distribution). I will be sending a copy for inclusion in the PMDF tape, and will also attempt to include NEWS in the Fall 87 Decus tape (time permitting). If anyone wishes to place NEWS in a network accessible location on their node for collection via FTP or similar, please do so, and preferably publish the relevant procedures on how to obtain a copy on the relevant network. I hope these arrangements suit all who wish to obtain a copy of NEWS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Geoff Huston Computer Services Centre, Australian National University AUSTRALIA ACSnet,CSNET: gih900@fac.anu.oz INTERNET: gih900%fac.anu.oz@uunet.uu.net UUCP: {uunet,hplabs,ubc-vision,nttlab,mcvax,ukc}!munnari!fac.anu.oz!gih900 PSI_MAIL: PSI%0505262440032::gih900 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
