I have a problem with VAX mail..... It seems that every time I login, it tells me I have one new mail message, but when I get into mail, and type dir, it gives me the directory of my main folder. This seems to have been caused by my compressing the main mail file down when I received a mail message. Can someone tell me how to get rid of that outstanding mail message???? I've already tried to compress it down again, but it still hasn't gone away. I might be mis-reading this message, but it seems to me that the poster actually wants to know how to read the outstanding message, not just reset the message counter. If you are compressing your MAIL file, and happen to receive a message at just the right time, the new message ends up in the file MAIL.OLD, rather than MAIL.MAI. (I know this because it happened to me, and I was quite surprised by this lapse.) Entering READ/NEW will indeed reset the new message counter, but will not let you read the message. To actually read the message, you should type SET FILE MAIL.OLD, then SELECT NEWMAIL, and then READ. If you want to keep the message around, you should explicitly file it in the file MAIL.MAI.
