[comp.os.vms] HUNG LOGINS ON MICRO-VAX

V2002A@TEMPLEVM.BITNET (12/09/87)

 Hi,

     We are running Micro-VMS 4.5 on a uVAX 2 with All-In-One. I
just finished installing VMS, All-In-One, Basic and FMS with our
8 user site license. I can log into the system console, but any
other port simply gives me 'password:'. It doesn't bother asking
for 'Username:' at all. It's not looking for a system password
because I tried it both with and without one. I've tried setting
both the protection and ACL entries for the ports to world RW but
to no avail :-( I installed the 8 user site license after the OS
and the mandatory upgrades. Would this have caused my dilemma?
     Thanks in advance!

Nope. The problem is the DEC decided to be helpful and set up autologins
for all your other terminals, the account it uses for that being, as I recall,
USER. The first thing I do after installing uVMS on a new system is to get rid
of this 'feature' (and it's thankfully not reinstated when you upgrade to a
higher version). The filenames you want to deal with are
SYS$MANAGER:ALFMAINT.COM and SYS$SYSTEM:SYSALF.DAT. The latter, if you want no
autologins set up, can be deleted. The former is a procedure to allow you to
deal with individual autologins piecemeal.

I sincerely hope that when VMS 5.0 where (last I heard) "VMS is VMS" comes
out, DEC doesn't set up default autologins on any of their systems.

 Andy,
After you install uVMS on a system, you have this file called
SYS$SYSTEM:SYSALF.DAT, this file tells specified terminals to log in under the
USER account. If the USER account has a password, then that is what you need
to type in. If you wish to avoid the automatic login then either Delete or
Rename the SYSALF.DAT file. To warn you ahead of time, I've noticed that the
SYSALF.DAT file reappears when you perform a major VMS upgrade, so be sure to
check for the file after an upgrade.
