When reading a file from VAX C that was created by a fortran program with fortran carriage control as the file's attributes I can't read the very first character on every line of the file. I've tried: fopen(fn, "r", "rat=ftn"); with or without "rfm=var" and/or "mrs=0" However if I open the file with "rat=ftn" and "rfm=var" for writing in VAX C I can subsequently read the first character on each line. Checking the files with "analyse/rms" I find that both files (created by FORTRAN or created by VAX C) have the same file organization, record format, and record attributes. So whats the difference? With files created in either manner I get a control-M showing up at the end of each line, but I can live with that. Does anyone know if I can read the first character from a fortran carriage control file created by a FORTRAN program. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Mike Cherry cherry%frodo.decnet@mghccc.harvard.edu cherry@husc4.harvard.edu cherry@harvunx.bitnet .
